Mesa Community College (MCC) recently hosted the Region VIII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, with over 100 of the school's music, theatre and film students earning several top awards. 

Students from over 70 colleges throughout the region participated in the event, which recognizes and celebrates work produced by university and college theater programs. The region includes Arizona, Central and Southern California, Hawaii, Southern Nevada and Utah. 

MCC students receiving top awards include Tu Nguyen, who received the Regional Allied Design and Technology Award for hair and makeup design in the play Eurydice. Nguyen will move on to represent the region at the U.S. Institute for Theatre Awards. Also in this category, MCC student Kiri Malolo took honorable mention for Properties Design in Story Theatre. 

Additional winners include the MCC Eurydice collaborative design team, who won the Don Childs Las Vegas Stagecraft Institute Scholarship for attendance at the summer training program.

MCC's Miguel Lopez Maldonado was recognized with the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americans Student Dramaturgy Award for Program Notes. Xelha Castrejon and Macy Wood were chosen to participate in the Open Jar Institute summer intensive music theater workshops in New York City.
